First day in Porsmork

Today we woke up and left our camper for a few days to take a bus into Porsmork.

We’ve been wanting to come here since our first trip to Iceland. Porsmork is off of the ring road, a bit into the interior of the island. You can get here by hiking or by a special bus that crosses the river many times. The hike is appealing, but almost 25k long and very susceptible to weather. We opted for the bus, especially since we wanted to hike while we were here too.

The road to Porsmork was fun. The bus crossed the river many times, a few where the water was really rushing by and the ride was quite sporty as the bus pushed through. Sage loved the river crossings, asking for more each time. Eventually we arrived in Porsmork.

We have a small room here. Since we’ve been living in the van for a week, it feels luxurious.

We unpacked and went back to the main building for lunch of soup, sandwiches and bread. Sage loves being outside and playing with the rocks.

We picked a medium difficulty hike for the afternoon and set off around 1. Sage quickly went to sleep for over 2 hours.

It was a gorgeous hike, mostly nice weather with moments of rain and winds, but each only brief. We occasionally passed other hikers, trail runners and mountain bikers, but mostly felt very much on our own. The scenery was breathtaking. We snapped lots of pictures, none of which do it justice.

Back at camp, we explored a bit. Sage threatened wanting to go in the mildly warm pool. Fortunately she never actually got her swimsuit to do it.

Back at reception they had a delicious buffet dinner of cream of mushroom soup, bread, couscous, roasted vegetables and lamb. Sage asked for more of all of it.

Sage enjoyed playing and wandering around the dining hall.

Let’s see…lamb? Check. Soup? Check.
