On to the northern Westfjords

Today we woke up and took a hiker from the campsite to the grocery store. We were going there anyway, and it was nice to chat. He was from the Canary Islands and spoke Spanish, so we got to practice our Spanish too. I found him very easy to understand. I always find it interesting how certain dialects of Spanish seem a lot easier or harder to me.

After the grocery store we went back to the pool / gym and this time took turns working out and spending time with Sage in the pool. It was great. The gym was really nice and the pool is one of my favorites so far. The kiddie pool is warm enough to lie in while Sage plays, and she was happy to go back and forth to the hot tub, kiddie pool and big pool.

After working out and lunch we filled up with gas and began the 2 1/2 hr drive north to Ísafjörður, the largest town in the Westfjords. The drive wound along the edges of each fjord and then over the top to the next. The views were great.

Halfway there, we stop at the Dynjandi waterfall, considered one of the most impressive in Iceland. It was huge and had a really nice walk right up to see it.

For some reason Sage wasn’t that impressed. She had very strong opinions about where she wanted Steve to go, however he also had strong opinions about wanting to see the waterfall.

Back at the bottom he let her out to walk around and she cheered up.

Back at the car we continued on across the fjord and through two very long tunnels. We checked out a few spots for dinner, made some reservation and ended up eating Thai food in front of the grocery store. It was surprisingly delicious. Sage loved it, especially the noodles.

Dancing at dinner, who needs music

Then on to the campsite. Like so many, this one is right next to the pool. The pool and gym and camping facilities look great.

Our camping spot

I expect we’ll stay here for a few days while we explore out from here. The next fjord north is only accessible by boat, which we can find in Ísafjörður and I expect we will go at least one day to hike around. There’s also waterfalls and viewpoints and hikes and birds and restaurants here to explore. It also looks like our good weather may be ending. The forecast here shows rain tomorrow and rain and snow Fri & Sat. We’ll see, we may spend more time at the pool and local brewery instead.

66.15, – 23.25

After here there’s one more part of the westfjords which we’ll probably spend a day or two at before heading on to the next portion of Iceland, or detouring back to see the eruption.

Today marks 4 weeks driving aroumd living in a van. 7 more to go! We are definitely in a groove.
