A few days in the east

On Wednesday we explored around the lake at Egilsstadir a bit more. The country has very few trees, so it’s notable to see trees. There are a bunch in this area.

We drove around the lake while it rained lightly, stopping for Steve to run to see a waterfall.

Then we went on to a short hike at Hengifoss, another waterfall in the area. The rain had stopped and the sun poked through the clouds intermittently. We had lunch and hiked up the mountain.

From there we drove on to Seydisfjordur where we camped. I put Sage to sleep while Steve cooked a delicious peanut sauce with veggies pasta and rice. We met and chatted with a newlywed couple from Alicante, Spain that were waiting to go home after their honeymoon motorbiking around Iceland.

Friday we drove to the hike that brought us to Seydisfjordur. It was about 9 miles up the fjord to a lake. The hike followed a small stream up the valley. The views of the river, waterfall, valley and bay were amazing the whole way. The lake at the top was nice, but the hike was definitely more about the journey than the destination.

At the top we ate sandwiches and headed back down. Sage fell asleep on the way down.

Sage likes rocks and likes to ask for rocks as we hike. So we pick them up and hand them to her occasionally. After the 9 mile hike Steve looked in her carrier to find it was full of rocks.

Back at the car and exhausted, we went back to the campsite which was packed with people waiting for the ferry to Denmark. The ferry had been delayed a day due to weather.

Yesterday we drove from Seydisfjordur through Egilsstaðir and to Eskifjorður, where they had a nice looking public pool and gym.

Sage took a long nap in the car while Steve and I worked out in the pool parking lot. Then we went to the pool and enjoyed the hot tubs, kiddie pool, and slides. Sage requested the slide by color (she liked the orange one). And the last time she and Steve went the water had stopped flowing, so they came back. She pointed at the slides and said “stop”.

Today we did laundry while Sage fed the ducks, got smoothies, and took a long (3 hr) drive clockwise along the east to Hofn.

We stopped for lunch and a few lookouts along the way. At one we drove into some soft rocks and got stuck. Luckily it wasnt too bad, and, with the help of some fellow travelers, were able to push ourselves out. The view was beautiful!

We got to Hofn around 3:30pm so we visited the pool. Sage immediately saw the slides and was excited.

From the pool we drove to the local campsite and put Sage to bed. Steve is making cauliflower tikka masala right now. Yum.

We’ll spend the next week and a few days exploring the south more before meeting my parents at the airport.
