Last few days in the southwest
Yesterday we got up and drove out to see the puffins on the far end of the island one last time. Steve ran there as Sage and I drove. It looked like the kind of run you’d see as an option on my treadmill.

There were lots of puffins, confirming our suspicion that the morning is the best time to view puffins.

After breakfast we went down to the harbor to see about getting on an earlier ferry. We were the last car to make it on, just as they fit us in, the raised the gates and off we went.

Back at the harbor we made lunch and enjoyed the beach.

Then we drove nearly 2 hours back to Reykjavik to see Melissa, Jason and Jack and take care of all of our last minute items in Reykjavik before continuing on around the island. We met them at a mall, which was perfect for Sage to play, and us to do some shopping. Then we went to dinner at a fish and chips spot right on the harbor. The food was delicious and the view was great!
Today the weather was beautiful and sunny and (Iceland) warm again. We woke up and picked up the Halliburtons and headed down to Grindavik, the site of the most recent volcanic eruption. We stopped at a lake, a geothermal area, the volcano and lava field that was just active and the cliffs at the southwest-most part of the island.

From there we drove back into Reykjavík and went to Messinn, a restaurant we had liked from the food tour. It was amazing. We had the dish we loved from the food tour, in addition to others. All of it was delicious. Sage loved it all.

Then Melissa, Jason, Jack and I all went to the Sky Lagoon hot springs while Steve and Sage did some grocery shopping and visited a playground.

The sky lagoon was awesome. What a great end to the day. I think it might be my favorite hot spring in Iceland so far.

After we dropped the Halliburtons off at their hotel we headed north towards the Snaefellsnes peninsula, our planned destination for the next week. We are currently camped in Akranes, at a beautiful campground looking out over the water. In a way it feels like the next chapter of an amazing adventure.
