Rain, Rain Go Away!

It was raining this morning here in Porsmork, with a forecast that showed rain all day. We know this is Iceland. We were planning on a long hike, but we decided to push that until tomorrow and picked a shorter one.

Fortunately, we just got Sage a good rain coat and pants at the Hagkaup (Icelandic Walmart), so we put her in that and us in our rain coats and rain pants and set off.

Just as yesterday the views were amazing, and it feels like it’s just us in the middle of nowhere out here. It was beautiful but wet. Our raincoats unfortunately failed, and by the end of the hike Steve and I were soaking wet. Fortunately Sage was dry in her new rain suit and rain fly, but even she was asking for the sun and to go inside. I think it was the first time I’ve heard her request ‘inside’.

We went back to the lodge, stripped off our wet clothes, and Steve put Sage in her tent for a nap, while I had soup buffet. Then we warmed up, read books and played games in the sitting area while Sage slept.

It was a bit tough to put back on wet shoes and wet jackets to run back to the lodge for dinner, but food and internet called, so we ran back to eat, check weather and plan the next few days.

While it’s not ideal to be stuck inside while it rains, I am reminded that this is one benefit of being here for a while – we can wait out the weather and not feel like we are going to miss out.
After dinner, the rain had let up a bit and Steve was dryer than I was, so Sage and I went back so I could put her to sleep and Steve went off to hike up to the top of the nearest peak, which should be around 1-1.5 hours. That is a really cool thing about it being light all the time. I am hopeful my clothes will dry by morning too.
