Amazing day in Porsmork

Today we took the bus to Porsmork.  The ride was beautiful and fun as always. We sat in the very back which was extra bumpy, but allowed us to see more.

Sage fell asleep

When we arrived we regrouped and decided on the 5.5 mile red loop, which is probably one of my favorite (if not the favorite) hike here.

We started off towards the Langidalur hut and then up to the top of the mountain east of it.  It’s steep at the beginning.

The weather was amazing.  Warm, no wind, clear.   It might have been the best weather day we’ve had the whole summer here in Iceland.

We rewarded ourselves at the top with lunch.  The weather was so nice we could sit and enjoy.

From there we hiked on along the top enjoying the amazing views.   It’s hard to get a picture that really does it justice.

Then we started the hike down, which wound around with views of the mountains, glaciars and valleys around.    An amazing day all around.

We got a little lost on the way back – I think we walked around 6 miles when we finally got back.   I already know my parents are pretty amazing.  But also, they hiked 6 miles up a mountain.  It’s pretty cool they’re in such great shape.

Beer and soda with fries at the lodge were delicious.   The earlier bus was full so we sat around the lodge.  Some played inside and outside.  Some napped.

We had dinner when it was served and caught the 730 bus.    After I booked it when I reviewed it I saw that it stopped at the other hut on the way back…  I didn’t realize it stopped at two huts and waited at the last one until 830, adding an hour to our trip.

Still the canyon was beautiful with the sun setting as we left.   I think we were all exhausted.  As we got back on the ring road we entered a thick fog so you couldn’t see anything beyond the road.

We drove the vans east to Skogar for the night.

What an amazing day!
